Six tips to put your travel insurance to work

About your pre-existing conditions
It’s always important to disclose all past and current medical conditions. If you don’t, and a medical issue interrupts your travels, the insurance provider may find a ‘direct or indirect’ connection with a health condition you have omitted, and decline your claim.

Anything can be relevant, including surgeries that you had when you were a kid or symptoms that haven’t reappeared for several years. It might be hard to remember your entire medical history, especially health problems that are well in the past, but keep in mind that we can help – by asking the right questions.

The detail counts
Have you got travel insurance booked for the right dates? Make sure you’ll be back home before the cover expires, and double-check the departure and arrival dates, being careful not to get confused with the different time zones. When selecting your cover period, we recommend using New Zealand time zone as a reference.

Ensure family emergencies are covered
Travel insurance usually covers trip cancellations that are due to family emergencies such as a non-travelling relative falling ill or worse. Once again, don’t forget to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions they might have, and read the small print carefully to work out what’s covered and what’s not.

If possible, don’t go your own way
Need medical treatment overseas? Unless it’s a matter of strict urgency, before you proceed, remember to discuss the ‘where’ and ‘when’ with your insurance provider or get in touch with us for guidance. Based on your circumstances, the insurer may decide that your condition is not an emergency, and recommend you to fly back and get treated in New Zealand.

What to do in case of theft
If you’re bringing valuable items with you, always keep an eye on them. Regardless of how safe you think your surroundings are, leaving property unattended may expose it to theft or loss. And if you were found to be careless or negligent, your claim may be rejected.

Plus, in any case involving stolen property, you must report the loss to the police within 24 hours. Timely police reports are a mandatory requirement for claiming on a travel insurance policy, and provide all necessary details that your insurance provider needs.
